“His body may be slightly broken but his spirit is not.” That’s how Diane McManus describes the three-legged German Shepherd that has stolen the hearts of workers at Charles Smithgall Humane Society in Sautee.
Fittingly, they named him ‘Shep’.
Shep moved into the no-kill shelter after he was rescued off the streets. He was found hungry and alone with his rear left leg amputated.
How he got that way is a mystery.
“He appears to have been abandoned and was attempting to survive on his own when his wandering brought him to the attention of people who gave him refuge,” explains McManus. ” They searched extensively for an owner with no success.”
Now, McManus and the rest of the staff and volunteers at the shelter hope to succeed in finding Shep a permanent home.
His body may be slightly broken but his spirit is not.
Adoption ready
Despite his missing leg, Shep manages to get around quite well. He has a steady walk and loves to ride in cars. He does not like cats but is “very affectionate” with people, McManus says. He appears to get along fine with other dogs but “may be selective” if feeling dominated.
Shep’s been neutered, fully vaccinated, tested free of heartworms and was reported to be “mostly housebroken” before arriving at the shelter.
