Local power outage caused by equipment failure

An early morning power outage Friday in Cornelia left several businesses and those not already sleeping, in the dark. The electricity went out around 2 a.m. The outage stretched from Walmart in Cornelia to downtown Demorest.

Georgia Power’s Mike Van Winkle says the outage was caused by an equipment failure at the Cornelia sub-station. Crews quickly diagnosed the problem and power was restored around 4 a.m.

The outage came on a night when several other unrelated incidents happened, stirring concern among some residents. People reported seeing and hearing emergency vehicles and law enforcement in the area.

Cornelia Police Chief Chad Smith says Gene’s Pawn Shop on Old Cleveland Road and Cornelia Feed & Seed store on Clarksville Street were both broken into. He says, “nothing was taken from either place.”

He adds there also was a car that got stuck on the railroad tracks. The driver was arrested for DUI.
