With a state unemployment rate of just under ten percent, many Georgians are still reeling from the economic impacts of the coronavirus pandemic. As a result, many critical nonprofit organizations are feeling the strain of meeting the increased demand for their services with decreased financial resources.
The Habersham County United Way is stepping in to help. The agency has launched a COVID-19 Response Fund with financial support from the North Georgia Community Foundation, StephJo Foundation, South State Bank, Ethicon, and others. Money from the fund will be used to make grants to local eligible organizations that support families and individuals by providing education, physical and mental health services, food, financial security, workforce development, shelter, and other related services.
To be eligible, an organization must be a 501(c)3 that is able to quickly and effectively deploy resources. Agencies that receive grants will be required to track and report on how the money is used and outcomes. Faith-based organizations are eligible if the projects serve purposes and participants regardless of religious affiliation or beliefs, according to a press release.
Organizations may apply for grants online though the Habersham County United Way website at https://habershamunitedway.org. Anyone wishing to contribute to the fund may do so using the same online link or by contacting the local United Way office directly at 706-778-0620 or by email at [email protected].
