Through each full week of sports in the school year, Now Habersham and BLITZ Sports are recognizing Northeast Georgia area Teams of the Week. This week’s teams are…
Football – Jefferson Dragons, Rabun County Wildcats & Habersham Central Raiders
The Dragons made the biggest statement of any team. A 19-0 win on SATURDAY at home against #1-ranked powerhouse Marist. Jefferson was also ranked #1 in its own classification, but to dismantle Marist like that hasn’t been done in a LONG time. The War Eagles were State Runner-Up just like Jefferson, and won 14 in a row before that title game. The last time Marist got beat by more than 18 points was in 2016. That should tell you a lot.
Meanwhile, Rabun County played a near flawless game at home against White County in a 42-6 final. Aside from a defender slipping on a deep pass and leading to a 77-yd TD, that side of the ball allowed nothing, only a few first downs. Offensively, they didn’t show much of the playbook – and yet still demolished the Warrior defense with five straight scoring drives and all 42 points in the first half.
Lastly, Habersham Central deserves the nod, too. Beating the rivals Stephens County by a landslide at 27-3, the Raiders more than lived up to the expectations that this is the year. This one could always go either way, but the defense deserves a huge shoutout for their job in keeping Stephens County from a single TD for the first time since 1993 in the series. That’s an incredible feat.
Softball – Banks County Lady Leopards & Lumpkin County Lady Indians
Banks County went a ridiculous 5-0 last week, outscoring opponents 38-8. That included wins over East Hall (6-0), Stephens County (5-3), Oconee County (12-4), Athens Christian (9-1), and Newton (7-0). The top-10 ranked team is now 8-1 overall.
Lumpkin County is 6-1 overall and already out to a 3-0 start in region play. Last week, the Lady Indians beat Forsyth Central 17-4 and swept against GAC, 11-3 and 13-2. That’s 41-9 in three games if you’re doing the math.
Volleyball – Tallulah Falls Lady Indians & Union County Lady Panthers
Tallulah Falls went 3-0 last week, storming back from down 2-0 against a really good Rabun Gap team to take a 3-2 victory. Then came a tri-match sweep against Stephens County and Elbert County.
Union County went 4-0 last week, going 8-2 in sets overall. The wins came against Lumpkin County, Dawson County, Rabun County, and Gilmer. The Lady Panthers are 5-1 on the season.
Boys/Girls Combined XC – Tallulah Falls
The Lady Indians placed second in their first meet, the Northeast Georgia Championships in Athens. The Indians were fifth. Olivia Henderson (3rd) and Teagan Penland (7th) were the top TFS runners.
