Friday night festival takes aim at bullying

A newly-formed group in Habersham is taking aim at one of the biggest problems facing young people today – bullying.

The Heart of Habersham Project is a community-based group made up of students and adults who want to promote “commUNITY”, according to the group’s president Angela Barrett. She says the group intends to raise awareness of bullying while also working to find solutions and help those who are victims.

Heart of Habersham will hold its first public event on Friday, September 21 at Habersham Central High School in Mt. Airy. “Light the Night Against Bullying” is a free, family-oriented festival designed to emphasize unity in our community.

“We are excited to bring this event to Habersham County to raise awareness of bullying at all levels of our community, and to engage with other organizations to provide resources to help those enduring it,” says Barrett.

The festival will run from 7-9 p.m. in the front parking lot of Habersham Central High School. It will feature superheroes from Heroes In Force, music, activities, emergency vehicles, a photo booth and more.

“Our student officers and representatives of the group will be present during the event to talk with those attending as we work to bring our community together in a fun atmosphere,” Barrett says. “Near dusk, we will light up public safety vehicles, tow trucks, utility trucks and other vehicles as a means of sending a symbolic message that it’s time we address this societal issue in Northeast Georgia.”

Public parking will be available on the Camp Creek Road side of campus. Overflow parking will be available in the former driver education range adjacent to Raider Stadium, also accessible from Camp Creek Road.

In order to keep the event free to the community organizers say no sales vendors will be allowed.

Any organization that would like to set up an information booth or bring public safety vehicles may contact Barrett at [email protected] or (706) 499-8525.
