Efforts to restore electricity continue after Hermine knocks out power to hundreds of thousands in Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas

Nearly 30,000 Georgians in the southern and coastal parts of the state remained without power Saturday in the wake of Tropical Storm Hermine. The hardest hit areas are Brunswick and Savannah. At the height of the outages some 107,000 homes and businesses were without power.

Utility crews from across the state began reporting around noon Friday and are now in the region helping to restore electricity. Among them, some 40 Georgia Power crew members from in and around Habersham have been sent to assist in the restoration efforts.

Hermine was downgraded from a Hurricane to a Tropical Storm after making landfall in Florida before dawn Friday. The storm brought strong winds and flooding to Florida’s Gulf Coast and knocked out electricity to more than a quarter of a million people.

One person was killed after being hit by a tree. Florida Gov. Rick Scott warned residents to avoid unnecessary travel.

At least eight counties in Georgia reported damage associated with the storm. Chatham County’s Emergency Management Agency reports a possible tornado spawned by Hermine downed trees and damaged several structures in the Savannah area.

No injuries or deaths have been reported in Georgia due to the storm.
