Junior Joseph Morris and the Piedmont men’s golf team posted their best finish in the last seven years at the Chick-Fil-A Collegiate earlier today climbing to 11th place as a team shaving eight strokes off their first round score at the event hosted by Berry College.
Rome, GA – The Piedmont College men’s golf team wrapped up their final tournament of the fall season with the ending of the Chick-Fil-A Collegiate Invitational Monday afternoon. The team cut eight strokes from their first day score to miss a top ten finish by a mere three strokes placing 11th of 21 teams in the field.
The Lions’ 11th place finish marks their best finish in the Chick-Fil-A Collegiate in the past seven years after placing no higher than 12th doing so in the fall of 2011.
The five-man crew was lead once again by Sam Hill who managed to knock 5 strokes off of his first round score for a 72 in the second round, and his fourth top 25 finish this fall. Hill finished tied for 25th after leaping 13 spots after being tied for 38th after round one.
The finish marks an astonishing fall for the freshman recording four top-25 finishes including a 5th place finish at the Tom Kinder Memorial Tournament and a 1st place finish the Piedmont College Fall Invitational.
Alongside Hill was freshman Davis Cook who finished the second day with a 76 and a six spot jump into a tie for 32nd. Following behind him was Austin Coleman who scored an 81 on the second day and finished tied for 68th.
Jake Forbes and Joseph Morris made improvements as well as Forbes knocked off 4 strokes from the first day with a 78 on day two and a tie for 74th finish. Morris showed the greatest improvement on the team as he knocked off an astounding 9 strokes for a 77 score on day two and a tie for 88th finish with 121 players in the field.
Coastal Georgia was able to comeback from their three-stroke deficit on the first day and win the tournament with a 283 on the second day and a 572 overall. The Roadrunners of Dalton State fell just short of the title finishing one stroke overall behind them with a 573 overall score.
Rounding out the top four were the University of the Cumberlands (583) in third and Spring Hill College (591) in fourth of the 21 team field.
