Demorest, GA – After nearly a month away from competition due to inclement weather causing cancellations and postponements, the Piedmont College men’s tennis team was finally able to get on the courts winning in shutout fashion earlier today, 9-0 over Ferrum College.
The match was the USA South opener for Piedmont but the second straight conference match for Ferrum who now sits at 1-4 overall and 0-2 in league play.
Winning in doubles play was the pair of Metzgers, brothers Matt and Nathan, as the two took an 8-1 decision at the #1 doubles spot. Each also picked up wins in singles action as well as Matt won 6-2, 6-4 at the #1 singles slot while Nathan was a 6-0, 6-0 winner at the #2 spot.
Mason Riza and Bryan Barnett were the winners at the #2 doubles slot taking an 8-5 win over Ferrum’s Kevin Minter and William Sharp while the #3 doubles decision went to Piedmont’s pair of Robbie Werner and Austin Miller. Riza also won at the #5 singles slot to move to a team-best 4-1 in singles play this season while Werner won at #6, 6-0, 6-1.
The win at #3 singles belonged to 2014 All-Conference selection Trey Martin as the team’s lone senior did not drop a game, 6-0, 6-0 against Ferrum’s Minter. Brent Jenkins was the victor, 6-2, 6-4 at the #4 singles spot as he pulled even at 3-3 in singles action this year.
Next up for PC will be the 2015 home opener vs. William Peace University on Friday, March 13 as the Lions will play host to the Pacers for a 2:00 pm first serve at Burgen Tennis Courts.
