Demorest, GA – The Piedmont College men’s tennis team rallied to pick up a big non-conference decision over visiting Millsaps College 6-3 at Burgen Tennis Courts earlier this afternoon. The Majors entered the match with a 10-0 record on the year, but left Burgen with their first loss of the season as Piedmont won five of the six singles decisions to overcome a doubles deficit for the victory.
Piedmont took the #1 doubles decision with the Metzger brothers combining for the victory, their 5th as a doubles pairing this season. The two knocked off Charles Rees and Sean Solomonoff of Millsaps 8-4, but Piedmont dropped 8-6 decisions at both the #2 and #3 doubles spots to trail heading into singles play 2-1.
The Lions would rally though to overcome the deficit taking five of the six singles decisions with four of those coming in straight sets. The only Lion to be pushed to three in a singles win was #2 Nathan Metzger who defeated Alex Centurion 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (9-7) to pick up his fourth singles win of the season.
Winning at #3 singles was senior Trey Martin who picked up a 6-4, 6-0 win for his fourth win in singles play as well while Mason Riza was the winner for Piedmont at the four spot not dropping a game to Rami Jamileh, 6-0, 6-0.
Freshman Brent Jenkins won a tight two-setter at the #5 spot 6-3, 7-5 to pull within a singles win of an even 6-6 mark this season while Robbie Werner moved to 6-5 in singles play with his 6-2, 6-0 decision over Thomas Mills at #6 singles.
Piedmont’s victory over the Majors moves the Lions to an even 4-4 on the season and 2-1 in their last three meetings with the Mississippi-based school.
The Lions will have a day off from competition before hosting defending conference champion North Carolina Wesleyan College on Sunday, March 29 at Burgen Tennis Courts. First serve in the USA South match is set for 10 am.
