Atlanta, GA – A pair of Lion basketball players were honored by the Georgia Basketball Coaches Association (GABCA) this week as Chris Meeks and Chase England earned second team all-state honors for the Division III team. Meeks and England both ended the season in the top four on the team in scoring and in the top three in rebounding for the Lions.
This is the sixth time in the last seven years that the Lions have had players honored by the GABCA on the all-state teams as Brain Edwards was selected to the second team listing a year ago.
The Division III Player of the Year went to Alex Foster of Emory University as he earned one of the five first team slots and brought the award back to the Eagles for the sixth straight season with head coach Jason Zimmerman named Coach of the Year. Taking home the Division III Newcomer of the Year was Justyn Olson of fellow USA South school LaGrange College.
Emory led the way with three selections, including a pair of first team honorees, followed by Piedmont and Oglethorpe who both had two members selected.
Chris Meeks ended the season averaging 9.8 points per game and a team-high 8.0 rebounds a game. The junior from Savannah, Georgia posted seven double-doubles this season including going back-to-back against LaGrange and Huntingdon.
Against the Panthers of LaGrange, Meeks had one of his best games of the season putting up 22 points and 13 rebounds, followed by an impressive 18 points and 16 rebounds against Huntingdon College. The junior forward ended the year second in the conference in rebounds per game at 8.0, just 0.1 behind the leader from Averett University.
Chase England was the leading scorer for the Lions in the 2014-15 season as he finished averaging 12.2 points per game, two points more than the next leading scorer on the team. England was one of three players this season to start every contest under head coach Greg Neeley.
The sophomore forward from Oakwood, Georgia improved from his freshman season where he averaged 10.9 points a game in 2013-14 and finished second on the team in scoring behind Brain Edwards. England scored in double figures in 18 games throughout the season including the final five contests of the year.
The Georgia Basketball Coaches Association was started eight years ago and is an association for small college basketball coaches in the state of Georgia covering NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, NAIA, and junior colleges with the aim of promoting small college basketball in the Peach State.
