DEMOREST, Ga. – The Piedmont University men’s soccer team fell in their CCS Quarterfinal matchup to No. 6 Maryville at home by a score of 2-1. The Scots scored twice in the second half, with the Lions attempting a late rally but coming up just short.
Though neither team scored in the first half, it wasn’t for a lack of opportunities. Maryville found space on multiple occasions only to hit the crossbar while Piedmont hammered away at the Scots keeper Mykal Manfred. The Lions held the edge in shots 9-4.
In the 68th minute, Maryville finally broke the draw and took a one goal lead. Looking to bury the Lions, the Scots doubled down on the lead in the 83rd minute. Piedmont refused to go quietly, giving themselves a chance to rally behind a Nathan Jacome goal. Cristi Pascaru swung a beautiful ball into the box that Jacome worked his way to.
The Lions were unable to create the equalizer as Pascuru’s header was saved with just 10 seconds left.
This marks the end of the Lions’ 2023 run.
