Lions Drop Two Spots

Pine Mountain, GA – The Piedmont College men’s golf team completed action at the Calloway Collegiate hosted by Berry College in Pine Mountain with round two taking place on Sunday afternoon.  The Lions finished in 12th place of the 19-team field with seven USA South members included in the competition.

PC was led by a pair of Lions who finished tied for 28th in the two-day event, Joseph Morris and Sam Hill, who both tabbed 153’s.

Hill (77-76–153) displayed consistency throughout his round with pars on 14 of 18 holes Sunday afternoon as the freshman shaved one stroke off his first round 77 to post a 76 in the final round of the event.  The youngster’s showing helped him climb eight spots on the leaderboard and finish in a four-way tie for 28th with his teammate Morris and two others, Luke Farley of Washington & Lee and Eric Havixbeck of LaGrange.

Havixbeck climbed 43 spots in the 102-player field while LaGrange managed to climb as well overtaking day-one leaders Guilford College for the team title. LaGrange, currently ranked 10th by GolfStat.com, turned in a 297-292–589 to finish four strokes ahead of Methodist University and Guilford for the team crown.

Oglethorpe’s Anthony Maccaglia won the individual title finishing 5-under par after firing a tourney best 67 on day two of the event.  Maccaglia posted a 72 on day one for a two-day total 139, three strokes clear of the next competitor.

Morris (73-80–153) posted a pair of birdies on the back nine, one on the par-4 12th and another on the par-5 16th, to recover from a 7-over showing on the front nine on day two.  Morris would card an 80 in the second round to finish in the tie for 28th along with Hill.

Two more Lions tied in the individual leaderboard with Jake Forbes and Davis Cook both finishing 83rd along with three others.  Forbes (80-84–164) shot 12-over on day two with a birdie on the par-5 11th as both of his birdies at the event came on par-5’s.

Cook (82-82–164) posted a pair of birdies in his round finish 10-over par with a day two 82.  The Lions’ final finisher was Austin Coleman (85-85–170) who finished tied for 96th in the event.

The Lions will be back in action on the weekend of March 13 to 15 as Piedmont travels south to compete in the Jekyll Island Invitational hosted at Pine Lakes Golf Course in Jekyll Island, Georgia.
