Lookout Mountain, GA – The Piedmont College men’s tennis team rolled to a 7-2 decision over the hosting Scots of Covenant College in USA South action earlier today starting off the match hot and never looking back.
Piedmont took all three doubles decisions in the contest winning at #1 doubles 8-6 with the brothers Matthew Metzger and Nathan Metzger accounting for the victory. The win is the third straight for the siblings from Auckland, New Zealand moving their doubles record to 8-5.
Mason Riza and Bryan Barnett accounted for the victory at #2 doubles with an 8-2 win while the pairing of Trey Martin and Robbie Werner picked up their fifth doubles win with an 8-3 score line at the #3 spot.
The match marked the fourth time this season for PC that the Lions have taken all three doubles decisions doing so in wins over Ferrum, William Peace, and Maryville.
With the 3-0 lead in hand, Piedmont went on to claim four of the six singles decisions falling only at #1 and #2 while the remaining four won in straight sets. Trey Martin was the winner at #3 knocking off Michael O’Brien 7-5, 6-4 for his third straight singles victory.
Brent Jenkins won at #4 singles 6-2, 6-2 to move his record to 7-7 in singles play while Robbie Werner was a 7-6 (7-1), 6-0 winner at the #5 spot. Bryan Barnett, now 5-5 in singles play after tonight, picked up the final decision for PC victorious at the #6 spot without dropping a game.
With the win, Piedmont moves to 6-7 overall and is now 3-3 in conference action. The Lions have won two of their last three matches with both wins coming in USA South action.
Piedmont will get back on the courts this coming Friday, April 10 playing host to another USA South foe in LaGrange College who comes to Burgen Tennis Courts for a 12:00 pm first serve. The contest is a rescheduled match from earlier in the season.
