Lions Back in The Win Column

Demorest, GA – The Piedmont College men’s lacrosse team got back to winning ways this evening with a 13-7 home decision against the visiting Monarchs of Methodist University.

Methodist opened the scoring in the first after two minutes of play through Matt Layden.  The Monarchs scored again in less than a minute to put them up by two.

However, with 30 seconds remaining in the first, the Lions would make good on an extra man opportunity with Nick Green scoring the first of his five on the night to put the Lions on the board.  Green’s score came as the buzzer sounded to signal the end of the first with Lions heading into the second trailing 2-1.

David Salvatelli scored the first goal in the second to tie the score 2-2 with 13:16 remaining. Green then scored less than two minutes later to take the lead for the Lions for the first time on the evening.

Taylor Carter along with Salvetelli netted either side of a lone Monarch goal in the second to send the Lions into half with a 5-3 lead in the low scoring affair through 30 minutes at Walker.

With the lead in hand, the Lions assumed control in the third scoring seven goals comprised of a pair by Steve Blanchard, Carter, and Green respectively. The seventh was scored by Salvetelli which gave the freshman his third hat trick of his debut season.

The high scoring 3rd quarter set the tone for the Lions throughout the remainder of the matchup as the Walker faithful started to feel the tide shift to the side of the home-stsanding Lions.

Green would grab the last Piedmont goal with 11:51 remaining in the fourth, but the decision had already been set with Piedmont dominating play in the 3rd. The score brought Green’s tally on the day to five, which is his highest scoring game of the 2015 season.

Mick Baker started in the cage for Piedmont tonight getting the victory for the Lions, his 3rd of the season. Throughout the 60 minutes, Baker made 22 saves as the junior posted his fourth game this season with over 20 saves.

With the 13-7 win over the Monarchs, the Lions snap a five game losing streak to bring their overall record to 4-8 in 2015.

Piedmont next takes the field at home for senior recognition on April 4 against the Pride of Greensboro College with opening face off at 6:00 pm ET.
