Bristol, CT – On a clear night under the bright shining lights at Walker Athletic Complex, the Piedmont College men’s lacrosse team honored 11 graduating seniors on the program’s first-ever Senior Night after beginning competition four years ago.
What was not yet known during the pre-game festivities was that the fireworks were yet to come as one of the 11 veterans honored, senior Patrick Ammons, scored a spectacular no-look goal in the 3rd quarter that is now gaining national attention after taking the #9 spot in ESPN’s famous Top Ten Countdown on the staple show of the network, SportsCenter.
ESPN’s Rece Davis gave the recap of the spectacular moment first caught live on air on Piedmont’s own Mane Event Broadcasting Network as the Ammons play was described by Davis on the midnight SportsCenter, airing live from Indianapolis at the time, amongst a group of commentators including John Anderson and Jay Williams covering the Final Four as all three were in awe of the Ammons move that led to the goal.
The showing marks the 2nd time that Piedmont College has seen the Mane Event Broadcasting Network earn credits on the SportsCenter Top Ten countdown after a triple play from a Piedmont baseball game last year against Maryville College also made the countdown debuting at #4. The MEBN also made it onto the ESPN video page as well with a buzzer beating three from Piedmont’s Trae Gaines that helped the Lions’ basketball program to a win over Maryville at home in a raucous Cave Arena earlier this winter.
Ammons’ goal took the #9 spot in the midnight showing of SportsCenter after first being released via the Piedmont College YouTube Channel courtesy of the Office of Athletic Communications following the Saturday night contest under the lights at Walker Athletic Complex.
The clip first aired live on the Mane Event Broadcasting Network, Piedmont’s 2nd-year video broadcasting network which was newly implemented in the fall of 2013 and is powered by Sidearm Sports, Piedmont’s internet solutions partner since 2007.
The Mane Event Broadcasting Network has aired more than 200 Piedmont College athletic events over two years with the college’s intercollegiate sports featured either through live or video replay coverage on the Network.
The call was led by Piedmont commentator Stewart Young while credit for the videography goes to Piedmont student-worker Kendall Newell. Young was also on the call for the triple play that first aired on the Mane Event Broadcasting Network before making the SportsCenter Top Ten last spring.
Piedmont’s pick up on SportsCenter comes as a result of the efforts from the Piedmont College Office of Athletic Communications to utilize new media avenues of reaching the Green & Gold nation as the play was promoted on Twitter through the @PiedmontLions handle as well as on Facebook through the PiedmontLions page.
Since June of 2013 when plans for the new Mane Event Broadcasting Network were unveiled, @PiedmontLions has seen its number of followers nearly triple from about 300 on May 1st, 2013 to now close to 900 and growing.
