A family was forced from their home near Clarkesville this morning after it was hit by lightning. Habersham County firefighters responded to the call just before 5 a.m. at 4690 Piedmont Mountain Road.
When they arrived they found debris in the roadway.
“The residence apparently was hit by lighting, but the fire had already extinguished itself upon our units’ arrival,” says Habersham County Emergency Services Director Chad Black.
An LP Gas tank was damaged and leaking. Fire personnel shut off the gas. Crews also located a small woods fire which was either started by the lightning strike or from a trash pile the residents burned earlier in the day, Black says.
Gas and electrical service to the home had to be disconnected due to the damage. The family was forced to temporarily relocate until repairs can be made.
Fortunately, no one was injured.
