Lightning is being blamed for a house fire that broke out in Banks County during Monday’s severe weather.

The residence at 428 Otis Brown Road sustained moderate damage throughout, says Banks County Fire Chief Steve Nichols.

Firefighters responded to a report of a structure fire around 6 p.m. on August 7. They arrived to find the single-family residence with heavy smoke and fire showing.

“An initial aggressive fire attack allowed for a quick containment of the fire,” says Nichols.

The Jackson County CI Fire Department assisted Banks County firefighters in extinguishing the blaze.

Nichols says lightning struck a tree in the backyard, sparking the fire. No one was home at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported. The American Red Cross was called to assist the family.

Lightning is also being blamed for a fire in south Habersham that occurred as fierce storms swept across northern Georgia on Monday.

The fire destroyed a storage shed in the yard of a home off Hosanna Lane.
