When the wind whipped up in Habersham Wednesday Bob Williams was oblivious to it. He was inside his Cornelia home napping.
He was awakened by a knock at the door.
“By the time I got to the door, no one was there,” he says. He then noticed two Cornelia Police cars parked outside his house. He stepped onto his porch to “find out what was going on.” That’s when the officers told him the American flag he was flying fell to the ground, blown out of its bracket on the side of the house by gusty winds.
They could have just passed on by but Sgt. Hunt and Officer Ross didn’t; they showed their true colors and retrieved the fallen flag.
“They could have driven right on past my house, but they didn’t, they stopped and did the right thing.” – Bob Williams
“They properly folded it, placed it in my mailbox (and) put the pole in the corner for me,” Williams says.
The officers’ actions so moved Williams he shared the story with friends on Facebook. He tells Now Habersham the officers’ gesture had special meaning for him because his dad was a veteran.
“Daddy was a Navy man and taught us to respect the flag, country, military and law enforcement,” says Williams. “It thrilled my heart to see these two young officers have the same love and compassion.”
Williams ended his social media post with two hashtags, #bravoblues and #smalltownliving. He says he hopes his post will help people see the human side of law enforcement officers.
“While they have a job to do that isn’t always pleasant and easy, this was something they were not required to do by job description. They did it for the love and respect of our flag and country. God bless them!”
