Life in Motion: One Special Day

Skill, courage, sharing, and joy are more than words on a ribbon; they are the essence of the Special Olympics.

On April 17, over 100 Olympians from Habersham County’s primary and secondary schools competed in this year’s Special Olympics Games. Their day began with a pep rally in the gym at Habersham Central High School. That was followed by a day full of track and field events at Raider Stadium.

Many organizations and individuals assisted with the Games. Students from Youth Leadership, the Key Club, Advocates for Special Olympians, Habersham Central’s early childhood education program, DECA, and FCCLA created posters and served as peer buddies. They helped the athletes on the field and ran Olympic Town, where the Olympians participated in activities in between their sporting events.

This year’s event also included a ‘master class’ of Olympians – former students who got to take part in the Games.

“It was a great day!” says HCHS Special Education Teacher Stephanie Frankum Lewis. You can see just how great it was from the pictures she shared with us.
