The City of Cornelia will be doing utility work on Level Grove Road on Friday. The work zone will be near the intersection of Williams Street just past Ingles and the Highway 441 intersection. They’ll be out there tomorrow from 8 am until 1 pm so prepare to slow down and watch out for the workers.
We expect you’ll be seeing more work zones along Level Grove in the coming months as the City of Cornelia moves forward with a plan to add sidewalks the full length of the road from downtown to the business area at the bypass. Cornelia City Manager Donald Anderson described it last week as a public safety issue, “If you ride up Level Grove Road you can see the trails where people walk from downtown to Ingles and Quality Foods,” he explains. “It’s a dangerous thing.”
To make way for the sidewalks, Georgia Power will be relocating power poles and doing other work at nine locations along Level Grove. The city will pay $77,286 of the estimated $200,000 price for that work.
The city is paying for part of the sidewalk project with $300,000 in state tax dollars in the form of a Georgia Department of Transportation grant. The rest of the estimated $450,000 total price tag will come from Special Purpose Local Option Sales taxes.
