Lady Raiders put up valiant effort in state playoff loss to Creekview

The Lady Raiders were eight minutes from pulling off a major upset in the opening round of the 6A State Playoffs at Creekview.

#4-seed Habersham faced the unenviable task of traveling to and taking on #1-seeded Creekview. The Lady Raiders trailed 12-6 at the end of a quick and low-scoring first quarter.

Habersham had just five second-quarter points, but the defense kept the game close, as the teams went into the halftime break in a low-scoring affair with the Lady Grizzlies leading 21-11.

The second half saw a different Habersham team, as the girls doubled their scoring output with 20 points in the third, tying the game at 31 apiece heading into the final quarter.

Creekview reached deep to hold off the furious Lady Raider comeback attempt, taking the 50-40 win as time expired. For Habersham Central (16-13), the loss capped an unforgettable year, as coach John Hood’s girls got back to the state playoffs for the first time in five years. Senior Lainey Gosnell also provided some unforgettable moments, as she eclipsed the career scoring mark for the Lady Raiders.

The season is now complete for Habersham Central basketball.
