Demorest, GA – In front of a packed house on a Friday night under the lights at Walker Athletic Complex, the Piedmont College women’s soccer team opened the home portion of the 2015 in style with a 3-0 shutout over the visiting Mariners of Maine Maritime Academy.
The win keeps Head Coach Stephen Andrew undefeated in home openers as well with Piedmont now having outscored its opponents 14-1 in its 4-0 start to the 2015 season. MORGAN EDELMAN accounted for the gamewinner scoring off a Piedmont corner kick in the first half to notch her second career goal in as many games.
With a 1-0 lead at halftime, veteran MEGAN HATFIELD helped pad the lead with a score in the 49th that doubled Piedmont’s advantage and gave her a third goal in 2015. A third score sealed the win when HALEY HALL dropped a moon shot over the head of the Mariners’ keeper from 30 yards back and just in front of the touchline where the home fans cheered on the Green and Gold.
Though the 3-0 win pushes Piedmont to 4-0, perhaps the toughest test lies next on the schedule as the Lady Lions face Berry College, a perennial power in the South Region, on Tuesday evening in Rome, Georgia.
