The Piedmont College women’s lacrosse team has set the 2017 schedule with first year head coach Laura Patton at the helm.
The Lady Lions are coming off a 10-7 season including an impressive 6-3 record while on the road.
To start off the 2017 season the Lady Lions play two games in Demorest with the home opener coming on February 11 against the Lynx of Rhodes College. PC has faced the Lynx once before falling to Rhodes 13-10 while on the road. The Lady Lions follow quickly with a home contest on February 14 against Oglethorpe University as Piedmont boasts a perfect 4-0 record versus the Stormy Petrels. The last time these two teams faced off PC held the Stormy Petrels to only one goal.
The Lady Lions hit the road on February 17 for the first time in 2017 to play Centre College in Danville, Kentucky. Piedmont currently holds a 1-1 record against the Colonels picking up a big 17-8 win in their last contest back in 2015.
Back in Demorest, the Lady Lions play host to Birmingham Southern College and Otterbein University on February 22 & 26, respectively. The Lady Lions have yet to play the the Otterbein Cardinals however the team from Westerville, Ohio comes down south for their spring break trip also playing USA South foe LaGrange.
Next on the schedule for the Lady Lions is a trip to Sewanee University in Tennessee on March 1. PC won last years contest in stunning fashion scoring twice in the final 38 seconds to win the contest 13-12.
Another new face comes to Demorest on March 3 as Adrian College comes to play Piedmont from Michigan. The Bulldogs also face Birmingham Southern while on the trip down south.
For spring break the Lady Lions trek to the Lone Star State to play two contests in Texas. First on the trip is a neutral site contest against the Tigers of Wittenberg University on March 8th then two days later PC faces off against the Pirates of Southwestern University. The Lady Lions have yet to play either of these teams in seasons past.
After the trip to Texas, Piedmont starts a trifecta of USA South Conference games, starting with a trip to Ferrum, Virginia on March 18 to play the Panthers of Ferrum College. PC has posted a 4-1 record against the Panthers with the only loss coming in the Lady Lions first season.
Before coming home to Demorest, Piedmont visits Greensboro College on March 19. Piedmont is 4-2 overall against the Pride while winning the only contest the two have played in Greensboro.
Back at the Walker Athletic Complex, Piedmont plays host to two more USA South members as Huntingdon College visits on March 22 and Meredith College visits on March 25. The Lady Lions are undefeated against the Hawks of Huntingdon and have split the eight meetings with Meredith at 4-4.
The last game of March is a road game against the Vikings of Berry College on March 29. The Lady Lions are perfect when playing on the Viking’s campus, posting a 3-1 record overall.
The last road trip of the regular season is to LaGrange College to take on the Panthers. In the four meetings between the two, the Lady Lions are a perfect 4-0 as Piedmont has not allowed more than four goals when playing the Panthers.
The final game of the regular season is back in Demorest for the Senior Recognition game against Methodist University on April 8. The Monarchs have yet to beat the Lady Lions in the four meetings between the teams. Last year’s contest came down to a one goal decision as the Lady Lions scored with less than 2 minutes on the clock.
All roads lead to the USA South Tournament which moves to LaGrange, Georgia this season from Rocky Mount, North Carolina. The tournament will take place April 14-15 with the top 4 teams making the field.
