Demorest, GA – The Piedmont College women’s lacrosse team got off to a great start in 2015 with an 18-4 victory over visiting Hendrix College at Walker Athletic Complex Friday afternoon in frigid temperatures.
Piedmont got six goals from junior MCKYNSEY DOUGLAS as she misfired only once on the day leading all scorers with her half dozen. Douglas scored 61 in 2014 and continued to stay hot despite the cold weather while Hendrix was limited to just a trio of goals as a team.
The contest start time was originally set for 4:00 pm but was moved up two hours due to cold winter weather expected to move into Northeast Georgia throughout the evening.
Piedmont started the scoring less than two minutes in with Douglas getting the first of her six with MAGGIE MCDANIEL getting the assist on the score. McDaniel finished the day with a pair of helpers and scored three times herself while also picking up three draw controls.
Hendrix tied the score at one all with a Raychl Reger goal less than two minutes later, but Piedmont would score five unanswered to squash the Warrior rally with four different Lady Lions accounting for the streak as McDaniel scored twice during the run. A pair of Hendrix scores with less than ten minutes remaining made the score 6-3 Piedmont as the visitors threatened to get back in it.
However, just before the halftime break, Piedmont tallied two more with Douglas doing the damage this time around as her efforts put PC up 8-3 at the intermission.
In the second half, Douglas again got the scoring going with a goal just over 90 seconds in on an unassisted effort to make it 9-3. That Douglas goal was the first of ten straight for Piedmont in the second half as the Lady Lions assumed control and never looked back following the break.
Hendrix did not score its lone second half goal until less than a minute remained on the clock in regulation as Reger scored her second of the day to set the final at 18-4 PC. Piedmont’s 10-1 score line in the second half set the difference in the contest as the Lady Lions outshot the visitors 16-11 in the final 30 minutes.
Piedmont’s ALEXIS NARDUCCI also tabbed a multi-goal day along with Douglas and McDaniel as Narducci scored twice with both of those coming in the second half. KAYLA FREUND also had two scores on the day while the assists leader was last season’s USA South Rookie of the Year, KAYLA JONES, as she had four helpers on the afternoon.
Making a solid debut was the youngster FRANCESCA MALABAD as the freshman was credited with six ground balls in her first ever collegiate contest leading the team in that column.
With the win, Piedmont moves to 1-0 overall winning the non-conference matchup with the Warriors.
The Lady Lions’ next contest was supposed to be Rhodes College at home on Sunday, but that game has been canceled due to inclement weather in the Georgia area. As a result, PC will get back on the field on Tuesday, February 24 when the Lady Lions play host to Oglethorpe University.
Start time against the Stormy Petrels is set for 4:00 pm at Walker Athletic Complex. Live coverage will be provided on the Mane Event Broadcasting Network with video and live stats available.
