Kemp extends gas shortage state of emergency

Georgia drivers will not have to pay the state gas tax for at least another week. Governor Brian Kemp on Friday extended his emergency order, temporarily suspending the tax.

Kemp declared a state of emergency on Monday, May 10, after a cyber attack on Colonial Pipeline caused a gas shortage. He increased weight limits for trucks transporting fuel to increase the supply and prohibited price gouging.

Those provisions and the suspended gas tax remain in effect through May 22.

“While Colonial Pipeline is now operational, the company has informed the public that it will be a few days until full service is available statewide,” the governor said. “This executive order will ensure fuel supply chains have every resource needed to deliver gas quickly and safely and that Georgians aren’t hit with state gas taxes at the pump during this shortage.”

Officials continue to urge Georgians not to hoard fuel and only purchase what they need for essential travel through the upcoming weekend.
