Millions of Georgians will gather with friends and family to celebrate Independence Day on Tuesday. While fireworks are synonymous with the 4th of July, it is important to remember the dangers they present.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that between 2006 and 2021, fireworks-related injuries have increased by 25%.
In 2021, approximately 11,500 emergency room visits involved fireworks, and at least 9 people were killed in related accidents.
Kids under 15 made up approximately 29% of the estimated injuries. Approximately 31% of selected and tested products contained fireworks not in compliance with the Federal Hazardous Substances Act.
Safety tips
When using fireworks this 4th of July, please practice the following safety tips:
- Always read the labels and follow the directions for each specific type of firework
- Light fireworks a safe distance away from other people and fire hazards
- Never re-ignite or pick up malfunctioning fireworks
- Do not give fireworks to small children
- Never aim a firework at another person
- Avoid using illegal or homemade fireworks
- Have a garden hose or bucket of water nearby
- Do not use fireworks when impaired by drugs or alcohol
- If you do not feel safe lighting your own fireworks, feel free to attend a public fireworks display
It’s the law
Under Georgia law, you must be 18 years old or older to purchase fireworks. There is no age limit for lighting them, but most injuries happen to kids under 16.
It is illegal to light fireworks under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
It is legal to shoot fireworks in Georgia any day of the year between 10 a.m. and 11:59 p.m. as long as local ordinances allow it.
It is illegal to light fireworks within 100 yards of:
- Electric plant
- Water treatment plant
- Waste-water treatment plant
- Gas station
- Refinery
- Electric substation
- Jail or prison
- Helipad
- Hospital
- Nursing home
- Other healthcare facility
