Karen Hughes, age 70, of Alto, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 25, 2023, surrounded by her family.
Born on February 15, 1953, in Atlanta, she was the daughter of the late Rev. James C. Smith and Mamie Cowart Smith. Mrs. Hughes worked as a bookkeeper for a number of years until retirement. Karen began playing the piano at the age of 12 and only played religious music. Over the years, she served as a pianist for numerous churches, most recently at Solid Rock Baptist Church in Maysville, where she was a member. Described by her family as a saint, she had a sweet, compassionate disposition and was loved by all. She was true to herself and had an easy smile and laugh that brought much joy to those around her.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 50 years, John Keeton Hughes II.
Survivors include her son, John Keeton Hughes III; daughter and son-in-law, Lisa Farriss (Mike) of Nashville; granddaughter, Lizzy Farriss; brother and sister-in-law, Ronnie Smith (Mary Alice) of Duluth; and numerous other relatives and friends.
Joint memorial services for John and Karen Hughes are scheduled for 10:00 am on Friday, June 30, 2023, in the Chapel of McGahee ~ Griffin & Stewart with Rev. Isaac McDuffie and Rev. Dennis Dills officiating. An informal burial will be held after the service in Four Mile Baptist Church Cemetery, 2405 Four Mile Church Road, Ball Ground, GA 30107.
The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 pm on Thursday, June 29, 2023, at the funeral home.
