A Cornelia man faces numerous charges after running during an attempted traffic stop in Mt. Airy. Georgia State Patrol SFC Chad Johnson says 43-year old David Ray Benson was clocked speeding on Camp Creek Road around 5:43 p.m. Wednesday. “When the Trooper activated his blue lights,” says Johnson, “the subject accelerated and turned onto Center Hill Lane where he stopped and fled on foot.”
That prompted a search in the area near Habersham Central High School involving GSP, Habersham County Deputies and K9 units from Lee Arrendale State Prison. Johnson says Benson was captured after K9 units tracked him down.
Residents in the area expressed concern when they saw officers searching but Johnson says at no time was the public in any danger.
The charges against Benson include speeding, misdemeanor obstruction of an officer, driving on a suspended license, expired tag and no proof of insurance.
