Voters across Georgia made their voices heard in several runoff elections on Tuesday, June 18. Incumbents (I) in a few of the runoff races were defeated. Many incumbents did not qualify for reelection or were defeated in the May 21 primary. Several counties will see new Sheriffs, Commissioners, and Chairmen. Here are the results for the runoff elections by county.
Clarke County District 2 Board of Education (nonpartisan)
Mary Bagby 90 56%
Claudia Butts (I) 70 44%
Incumbent Claudia Butts was defeated by just 20 votes in the nonpartisan runoff election. With no partisan challengers, Mary Bagby will take office next year.
Elbert County Sheriff
Darren Scarborough 973 56%
Dre’Kevious Gibbs 769 44%
Scarborough will now face Republican challenger Jamie Callaway in the November 5 General Election.
Franklin County Sheriff
Scott Andrews 2,499 57%
Brian Stovall 1,898 43%
Franklin County Commission Chairman
Courtney Long 2,391 55%
Joe Greene 1,952 45%
With no Democratic challengers for the Sheriff or the Commission Chairman seats, Andrews and Long will take office next year.
Habersham County District 1 Commission
Kelly Woodall 1,425 59%
Eric Holbrooks 972 41%
With no Democratic challenger, Woodall will take office next year. Woodall tells Now Habersham, “I am truly honored to have the opportunity to continue serving the people of Habersham as Commissioner.” He had kind words for his opponent as well, “Eric Holbrooks is a good man and I appreciate his heart for this county,” Woodall says.
Hall County Commission Chairman
David Gibbs 4,610 54%
Richard Higgins (I) 4,001 46%
Hall County State Court Judge (nonpartisan)
John “Tripp” Wingate 5,950 60%
Andy Maddox 3,955 40%
Hall County citizens will now have a new Commission Chairman next year. Incumbent Richard Higgins was defeated in the Chairman race. The citizens will also have a new State Court Judge with John “Tripp” Wingate defeating Andy Maddox.
Wingate will take office as State Court Judge next year with no further challenges for the seat in the nonpartisan office. Gibbs will take the gavel next year as Chairman of the Hall County Commission. He has no Democratic challenger for the seat.
Rabun County Sheriff
Mark Gerrells 1,878 84%
Chad Nichols (I) 351 16%
Incumbent Chad Nichols was soundly defeated in the race for Sheriff of Rabun County. Mark Gerrells defeated Nichols by 1,527 votes in the runoff race.
Gerrells tells Now Habersham that he is grateful for the results of the election. “I’m humbled by the voters support. I am very grateful and will do my level best to unite and provide a professional, transparent, and community minded Sheriff’s Office,” he says.
Stephens County Commission Post 3
Craig Oglesby 852 66%
James Addison 435 34%
Craig Oglesby defeated James Addison in the Stephens County Commission Post 3 seat. The seat was vacated by Commissioner Dennis Bell, who was defeated in his bid for the Stephens County Sheriff’s race. Oglesby will now face Democratic challenger Justin Richie in the November 5 General Election.
