Judge denies bond for three drug suspects

Three suspects remain behind bars in Habersham County after their arrests earlier this month on drug charges.

John David Clark, 53, of Athens; Terry Lee Ledford, 47, of Cornelia; and Jennifer Leann Velten, 33, of Gainesville, were taken into custody on August 17. They are accused of trafficking fentanyl.

According to the incident report, a deputy spotted the suspects traveling on Crane Mill Road in a BMW with a fictitious license plate. The deputy followed them and attempted a traffic stop. The suspects pulled over in the parking lot of a gas station on Mud Creek Road at Highway 365.

During the traffic stop, the deputy determined the driver, Clark, had an outstanding warrant from Gwinnett County for failing to appear in court. Ledford had a possible warrant against him in Hall County for a probation violation.

After taking the two men into custody, a sheriff’s office K9 alerted to possible drugs in the vehicle. The deputy found a styrofoam cup with suspected drugs in it in the back passenger-side of the floorboard. The substance field tested positive for fentanyl, the report states.

Velten was on felony probation at the time and the deputy also took her into custody. Before being taken to jail, Velten reportedly informed officers she had methamphetamine hidden inside her body. Jail staff retrieved the drugs at the jail.

Authorities charged all three suspects with trafficking fentanyl. A magistrate judge denied them bond and they remain in the Habersham County Detention Center.
