Joseph Damascus “Joe” Scroggs

Joseph Damascus “Joe” Scroggs, age 89, of Alto, passed away on Thursday, August 24, 2023.

Born on July 25, 1934, in Clarkesville, he was a son of the late Anderson Ray Scroggs and Emma Eunice Hardy Scroggs. He was a member of Habersham Rotary and the Cornelia Lions Club. Joe loved sports; he played football at South Habersham under Gene Alexander, then played football at Carson Newman College in Tennessee, where he had a scholarship. Following his sophomore year, he moved to Atlanta, where he began his lifelong career for Beck & Gregg Hardware while also attending night classes at Georgia State University. In 1956 he met and married Marcia Elizabeth Stephens. Only a few months later was drafted into the Army, where he served two years with a portion being in Berlin, Germany. After his discharge, he continued his work with Beck & Gregg Hardware. Joe and Marcia purchased and operated Cornelia Broom Company and opened Total Transmission and The Basket Peddler, all in Cornelia. Joe retired in 2008. He loved the beach and the lake, his good friends, but most of all, his family. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church Cornelia.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, A. R. Scroggs, and sister, Imogene Scroggs Oliver.

Survivors include wife, Marcia Elizabeth Stephens Scroggs of Alto; son and daughter-in-law, Joby Scroggs (Sarah) of Hartwell; daughters and sons-in-law, Fran Chastain (Ricky) of Alto, and Lisa Lynn Gnann (Pat) of Savannah; 17 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren.

Memorial services are scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 9, 2023, at First Presbyterian Church Cornelia, with Rev. Andy Chambers officiating.

A reception will follow immediately after the service.
