Persistence and practice do pay off, just ask Adam Jones. The North Habersham Middle Schooler was runner-up in last year’s memorably l-o-n-g spelling bee (it lasted 41 rounds) and this year he claimed the title of Champ.

The 8th grader outlasted ten other competitors from the county’s elementary and middle schools to win the top prize Thursday. This year’s runner-up is Nathaniel Welborn of Clarkesville Elementary School.

Both Jones and Welborn received cash awards from Now Habersham and were presented trophies from Volunteers for Literacy of Habersham County. School level spelling bee winners who participated in the event also were awarded trophies from VFL.

This year’s spelling bee was held at the Habersham Central High School Performing Arts Center in Mt. Airy. A scheduling conflict caused the usual evening event to be held in the morning, still, parents and staff made time to come out and support the spellers. This year’s pronouncer was Habersham Central High School Assistant Principal Dr. Amy Hood.

The 13-year old Jones will now go on to represent Habersham County at the District Two Spelling Bee in Marietta on February 25, 2017.

Congratulations to all of this year’s spellers!
