Joan Lee Franklin Hunter Smith, age 89, of Mt. Airy, passed away on Monday, February 13, 2023.
Born on March 30, 1933, in Eatonton, she was a daughter of the late William Burns Franklin and Vinnie Lee Allison Franklin. She worked as a supervisor and trainer at Southern Bell. After retirement, she worked as a private duty personal care aide. Mrs. Smith was a member of Antioch Baptist Church, the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, and AT&T Pioneers. She enjoyed antique shopping and loved the beach.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Lewis Hunter and several brothers and sisters. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Survivors include her husband, Bennie Smith of Mt. Airy; son and daughter-in-law, Don Hunter (Teri) of Woodstock; daughters and sons-in-law, Deborah Hunter Campbell (Jim) of Atlanta, Illinois and Denise Hunter Jenkins (Daniel) of Buford; grandchildren and spouses: Wesley Campbell (Allyson), Shelley Jenkins Randall (Keith), Stephen Jenkins (Heather), Branden Hunter (Ashley), and Paige Hunter; great-grandchildren: Riley Campbell, Davis Campbell, Noah Randall, McKenna Randall, Caleb Randall, Turner Jenkins, Luke Hunter, and Tate Hunter; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 pm on Saturday, February 18, 2023, in the Chapel of McGahee-Griffin & Stewart with Pastor Chris Webb and Rev. Walter Singletary officiating. Interment will follow in Yonah Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 2-6 pm on Friday, February 17, 2023, and from 11:30 am-1:30 pm on Saturday, February 18, 2023, both at the funeral home.
