James M. “Jim” Johns, Jr.

James M. Johns, Jr., age 80 of Alto passed away Saturday, December 14, 2019.

Jim was born in Richmond, Virginia May 13, 1939, to Ruth Ellis Hall Johns and J. Monroe Johns. He lived in Farmville, Virginia until entering College at Virginia Tech and the U.S. Navy. He was an Eagle Scout (1955), he earned a BS in Business Administration from Virginia Tech in 1962, Bachelor of Architecture from Virginia Tech in 1970 and Masters of Architecture in Environmental Systems from Virginia Tech in 1972. Jim was a Lt. Commander in the United States Navy and honorably served from 1962- 1968.

In his professional career, Jim worked with Wilbur Smith & Associates 1972-1979, The Maguire Group 1979-1983, and Fitzgerald & Halliday, Inc.1983-1995. Professional memberships include the American Planning Association, IBTTA, and American Civil Engineers Society.

He was a proud member and Elder of First Presbyterian Church Clarkesville GA (FPCC). He lived in VA & CT and upon retiring he and his wife Barbara moved to Georgia. He loved woodworking, hiking, photography gardening and meeting at Crossroads Cafe on Thursdays for breakfast with his buddies.

Survivors include His wife Barbara Fiengo Johns, his children James M Johns III, Robert Hall Johns (Samantha), John E. Fiengo, Richard S. Fiengo (Kristen). Grandchildren: Benjamin Johns, Abigail Johns, William Johns – NY, Megan Johns – CT, Nicholas Fiengo, Ashley Fiengo Hoyt (Kyle) – CT, Jennifer E Fiengo – SC, Timothy Fiengo, CT. Brother –Robert Johns (Janine) Glen Allen VA, daughter Allison – DC., The Hall & Johns Family cousins of Virginia and the US.

We want to thank and acknowledge the caregivers for Jim: Visiting Angels, Pruitt Hospice staff, Right at Home, Donna Loudermilk and are forever grateful for Habersham Home East nurses and staff. Also, we need to especially thank our FPCC Church family they have been with us each step of the way.

Visitation will be at Hillside Memorial Chapel, 5495 Hwy. 197 South, Clarkesville on Friday, December 20th from 5-7 PM. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, December 21st at First Presbyterian Church, 181 Jefferson St. Clarkesville with a reception to follow.
