Investigation underway after man shot in Toccoa while sleeping

Waylon James Lee, 42, was shot several times on Friday in Toccoa while sleeping in his camper, according to the Stephens County Sheriff’s Office.

At around 1:00 a.m. on Oct. 22, Stephens County 911 dispatch contacted sheriff’s deputies after receiving reports of someone being shot on Yearwood Street.

Stephens County Sheriff Randy Shirley said Lee was sleeping when an unknown person shot him several times through the window of the camper. After paramedics stabilized Lee, he was transported to North East Georgia Medical Center for treatment. Lee is expected to recover.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been called to assist in the investigation. The GBI, along with Stephens County investigators, worked through the early hours of Friday to process the scene.
