Investigation leads to largest ever seizure of fentanyl in White County

A multi-agency law enforcement investigation led to multiple arrests and the largest ever seizure of fentanyl in White County.

During the operation on Sunday, September 25, drug agents seized more than 168 grams of fentanyl, says Appalachian Regional Drug Task Force Special Agent in Charge Trent Hillsman. In addition, they seized 500 grams of methamphetamine, 60 grams of cocaine, 14 grams of ecstasy, and 103 grams of Alprazolam. Agents also confiscated black tar heroin, crack cocaine, marijuana, and a vehicle valued at over $10,000.

“This is the largest fentanyl seizure ever made inside of White County,” says Hillsman. “The total street value of the drug seizures was approximately $73,000.”

ARDEO investigated the case along with the sheriff’s offices in White and Lumpkin counties, the Riverdale Police Department, and the Atlanta-Carolinas HIDTA (High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas).

Agents arrested 34-year-old Joshua McLaughlin of Canton and 49-year-old Thomas Garnesy of Dawsonville as a result of the investigation. Both are charged with meth trafficking. Officers also charged McLaughlin with trafficking cocaine as well as possession of fentanyl, heroin, ecstasy, alprazolam, and marijuana with the intent to distribute.

The investigation continues.
