March: In like a lamb

The old saying referring to the month of March goes “in like a lion, out like a lamb”. This saying originated in 1732 and has stuck around in weather folklore ever since. This year, March will be coming in like a lamb with a calm, albeit at times breezy, first weekend of the month.

A cold front pushed through the region on Thursday afternoon ushering in some breezy conditions and some cooler overnight lows. Fortunately, the air behind this front is still fairly mild. Highs are expected to return to the mid/upper-60s for both Friday and Saturday.

A reinforcing shot of cold air will come with a dry cold front early Saturday. While highs Saturday will top out still in the 60s, winds will be increasing with gusts to 30-35MPH expected by Saturday afternoon.

Overnight lows will drop down well below freezing for the mountains with the rest of the region in the 30-34º range for Saturday night. Winds should help minimize any frost risk.

Afternoon highs behind the front on Sunday will be significantly cooler with only low/mid-50s expected.

Our next big weather maker isn’t due in until Tuesday/Wednesday so enjoy this calm while it lasts. March is generally a very active month with both snow and severe threats over the years. Spring weather waits just around the bend.
