Habersham Electric Membership Corporation is urging its customers to be vigilant in the wake of reports of imposters posing as HEMC workers.
The local cooperative issued a statement late Tuesday stating it’s “been notified of men visiting consumer homes claiming to check their meters. Both times the men have been in unmarked vehicles.”
HEMC says that would never happen. “All HEMC and contractor vehicles are clearly marked. Personnel also carry photo identification and uniforms,” the statement reads.
HEMC, which is based in Clarkesville, serves members in six Northeast Georgia counties including Habersham, Hall, Lumpkin, Rabun, Stephens and White.
The cooperative advises members who may encounter people posing as workers NOT to open their doors and to call 9-1-1 to report any suspicious visitors.
