I-85 NB Lane closing overnight Saturday for deck pour at GA-198

If you’re traveling through Franklin County on Interstate 85 North this weekend, be alert to a potential slowdown.

The Georgia Department of Transportation will close the left northbound lane three miles south of Exit 164/Carnesville Exit for several hours Saturday night for bridge construction.

Weather permitting, a subcontractor will pour the deck section over the northbound lane from mile marker 162 to mile marker 163. The lane closure is scheduled from 12 a.m. to 6 a.m.

Work began in March 2021 to replace the existing bridge on SR 198 over I-85, 3.0 miles southwest of Carnesville in Franklin County, Georgia. The total length of the project is approximately 0.19 miles. The bridge was built in 1962 and the design is outdated for current and projected traffic. The $3.5 million Georgia Department of Transportation project is ahead of schedule.

The construction contract was awarded to the Williams Contracting Company. The completion date for the project is November 30, 2021.
