(CLEVELAND) – The Truett McConnell University athletic department announced Friday that Fletcher Humphrey will step in as TMU’s first ever Head Coach of the Competitive Gaming program. Competitive Gaming, TMU’s second Life Sport, is set to begin in the Fall of 2020.
“As a coach, passion is something that is very important and he is definitely passionate about competitive gaming,” Athletic Director Jenni Shepard said. “I think that it’s a quality that will be really necessary, especially when you are going to be building a brand new program. We are so excited to see where Coach Humphrey is going to take these Bears.”
Humphrey, a Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia native, is a recent TMU graduate with a degree in Christian Studies and an emphasis in Student Ministry.
“Competitive gaming has always been the biggest hobby of mine, even if I didn’t always have all of the equipment,” Humphrey said. “Even the times where I wasn’t actually allowed to watch TV shows, I would always find a way to watch the MLG games, which was the competitive league back then. I even would find the old TV newspaper guides to figure out when I could watch the games. I can remember telling my family over and over again that ‘someday this is all going to be a very big deal.’”
In middle school, Humphrey would host competitive gaming tournaments at his house and his interest in the sport grew immensely in high school when he was given his first own PC.
“I am super humbled to be put in this position and I am really excited to be given another opportunity to serve this school and serve the Lord,” Humphrey said. “My overall goal is to build a community of teammates that not only succeed in the sport itself, but also build a family-like atmosphere that will ultimately honor the Lord.”
