Bright and early they started. Young and old, from near and far. All arriving for the B.C. Grant Baptist Church Outdoor Ministries 16th Annual Archery Shoot in Alto. The crisp August morning saw well over 1,200 shooters and spectators eager to join in on the free competitions, demonstrations, food and fellowship. Yes, all completely FREE!

The culmination of a year of preparation, built on the history of 15 previous successes, this event is something that the B.C. Grant Baptist Church puts its heart and soul into. The logistics involved and the amount of t-shirts, food, water, tables, chairs, planning, and volunteers, along with a great deal of community support, showed just how much they love to share their passion with others. In his welcoming remarks, Jason Blackburn, declared “as long as the Lord is with us, we will keep doing it.”

The festivities were kicked off by Bill Coen, whose rendition of “God Bless America” brought everyone to their feet. Next up was this year’s speaker, Pastor Terry Rice, a 75-year old Navy veteran who “lives to hunt and fish.” Pastor Rice spoke of how important each person is to God and the need to put God back in our country again. The crowd was quick to show their agreement.

The 382 pre-registered participants added to the 680 that signed up this morning, to put well over 1000 competitors out on the 6 courses. With 20 targets per course, the 9 classes were quite exciting. It was good to see all of the family join in on the fun, including the 19 kids under 9.

With everyone eligible for door prizes, it helps to have good sponsors, and this year’s list included Forest Lane Pawn and Outdoor Supply, Hayes Automotive, Outdoor Depot, Trophy Taker Taxidermy, and McClellons Outdoors, among others. Prizes ranged from gift cards and targets to tree stands and blinds. The grand prize this year was a BowTech Bow.
