Genesis 1:1-2, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.”
When I was a boy, I had a friend who lived down the street from me. Saturday mornings we loved spending time together, whether it was fishing, digging a hole, making a fort, climbing trees, or riding bikes – we just had head-to-toe dirt-filled days. Whenever we left his house, his Mama would call after us, “God can see everything you do…and so can I. Remember that, you hear?”
At the age of 8, those were the scariest, day-spoiling-words, anyone could ever say. Many a thought was diminished by Mrs. Thompson’s words. If God can see everything and she can too – what the heck was there left to do?”
As an adult I realize how true her words were, and how many knuckle-clinching, lip chewing events she saved me from doing. I actually used the phrase on my teenagers as well. I told them, “You may think you’re going to get away with something, but just wait, I’ll find out about it for sure.” And I usually did.
How awesome the realization that the Spirit of God hovers above us? Everywhere we are. Everywhere we go. Even now as I write to you and you are reading the words, God hovers above us.
David wrote about it in Psalm 51:10, “10 Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.”
David is writing in Psalm 51 his desire for total repentance after he committed horrific sin. He knew that Saul had lost favor with God and the Holy Spirit no longer dwelt within him. David did not want to lose the Spirit of God. He asks God to create in him a new pure heart. Psalm 51:11, “Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me.”
Only the Holy Spirit of God can put light into your life. As disciples of Christ, we must strive to keep the Holy Spirit within us by communicating with Him daily; reading scriptures and studying the Word of God; and acting accordingly in our daily walk.
There are times during my day I hear the words of Mrs. Thompson in my head. Times when I need to make a decision as to how to respond to a particular person or action. They are a reminder of whom I represent.
Consider it today as you go through your schedule. He hovers above, longing to create in us the heart we need to fulfill His plan and purpose.
