Abigail Hotard will hold onto her title as Habersham County’s reigning spelling bee champ for at least another year. The 6th grader from North Habersham Middle School won this year’s system-wide spelling bee. It was her second consecutive win.

The academic competition was held Tuesday, Jan. 22 at the Habersham Central High School auditorium. The top spellers from the county’s public elementary and middle schools competed.

This year’s runner up was Drew Burns. He’s a 5th grade student at Level Grove Elementary School.

Volunteers for Literacy of Habersham County (VFL) again picked up the tab for the school entry fees and student trophies. Georgia Power and the Georgia Association of Educators Habersham Chapter also helped sponsor this year’s event.

Now Habersham again provided the prize money for the system winner and alternate. Hotard received $100 cash. Burns received $50 cash.

LGES 5th grader Drew Burns was this year’s spelling bee runner-up.

Hotard will now go on to represent Habersham County in the district-wide spelling bee on February 23.
