Homer man killed after wreck on GA 365

A Homer man was killed Wednesday night, April 23, following a two-vehicle collision on Cornelia Highway (GA 365), according to the Hall County Sheriff’s Office.

The crash occurred around 8:20 p.m. at the intersection of Cornelia Highway and Lula Road (SR 52). Investigators with the Hall County Sheriff’s Accident Investigation Unit said 63-year-old Donnie Lamar Smith was driving southbound on Cornelia Highway when he attempted to make a left turn onto Lula Road.

During the turn, Smith’s vehicle is believed to have crossed into the path of a northbound vehicle traveling in the right lane, resulting in a collision. Both vehicles left the roadway and came to rest in the grass on the east side of the highway, according to police.

Emergency crews transported both drivers to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville. Smith, who investigators determined was allegedly at fault in the crash, was pronounced dead at the hospital shortly after 9 p.m.

The driver of the second vehicle sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

The Hall County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the incident.
