Homeowners encouraged to watch fire prevention video

(Cleveland)-  White County Public Safety Director David Murphy is encouraging homeowners  to watch a  13 minute YouTube  video on protecting your home against wildfires.

The video features Dr. Jack Cohen, Fire Science Researcher with the USDA Forest Service, explaining  current research about how homes ignite during wildfires, and the actions that homeowners can take to help their home survive the impacts of flames and embers.

Murphy said this video helps explain the basic steps homeowners can take to protect their homes, and shows where to find more information.

That information is timely given last year’s outbreak of wildfires in Georgia.

Up until last year, the state’s 5-year average was 4,601 wildfires per year. In 2016, there were 5,046 wildfires across the state, according to the Georgia Forestry Commission.
