Homeowner opens fire, scares away would-be burglar

A Cornelia man is in jail after allegedly attempting to break into a house near Clarkesville, only to be scared away when the homeowner opened fire.

27-year old Brandon Lee Stephens is charged with burglary.

According to a press release from the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a call of shots fired at 135 Wall Bridge Road in Clarkesville on June 29th around 2:55 p.m. When they arrived, they found a man – who did not live there – standing in the driveway saying he heard gunshots from within the residence.

The homeowner told deputies he saw a white male, wearing a red shirt, reach through a broken glass pane on his kitchen door and attempt to unlock his door and enter his residence. The release states, “The homeowner fired a weapon inside the residence. The suspect was not struck and fled the area.”

Stephens was later located by Habersham County Deputies at Fay Street Apartments in Cornelia. He was arrested without incident and is being held at the Habersham County Detention Center.
