It’s happened before and, according to Habersham EMC, it’s happening again. Scammers are calling the local electric cooperative’s members and are threatening to disconnect their service if they don’t pay over the phone.
HEMC issued a scam alert on December 16. The cooperative says their member service representatives “will never ask for payment over the phone.” The only way payments can be made via telephone is through Habersham EMC’s automated service at 833-890-9509.
“Members should hang up at once and report the call to their local law enforcement,” instructs HEMC spokesperson Nicole Dover. “Do not give out any personal information. Scams become more frequent during the holiday season. We ask that members please remain vigilant.”
HEMC members with questions regarding their accounts should contact customer service at 706-754-2114, 706-865-4362, or 800-640-6812.
Clarkesville-based HEMC serves more than 26,000 members in six Northeast Georgia counties.
