HEMC donates thousands to local nonprofits

Habersham Electric Membership Corporation is wrapping up a busy year of giving. The Clarkesville-based, member-owned cooperative recently handed out tens of thousands of dollars in donations to local organizations.
Under House Bill 431, EMCs in Georgia are allowed to use capital credits that go unclaimed for five years to fund education, economic development and 501(c)(3) charitable organizations in their service areas.

In 2016, HEMC representatives presented a total of $33,858 in unclaimed Capital Credits to organizations throughout its six county service area. The recipients include the following organizations in Habersham County (click photos to enlarge):

Other recipients this year include: Backpack Buddies of White County, Catalyst Christian Learning Center of White County, Community Hands Health Clinic in Cleveland, and Food2Kids of Rabun County.
