HEMC customers in Cleveland to be assessed franchise fee

(Cleveland)- Residents and businesses in the city of Cleveland who are customers of Habersham Electric will notice an increase in their power bill beginning in April. The increase is being made to offset a franchise fee that the city of Cleveland will be collecting from the power company for the use of city streets and public ways to provide electric service.

The city of Cleveland approved the fee late last year and the power company signed off on the agreement in February.

A notice mailed to all HEMC customers in the city states the franchise fee is calculated on the gross sales of electric energy and will result in a four percent increase.

Cleveland City Clerk Connie Tracas said, Georgia Power and Windstream are already paying the fee and this will equal the playing field for the service providers involved.
