Help avoid tragedies around water

Emergency personnel urge parents and caregivers to exercise caution to keep children safe around water. Habersham County Emergency Services issued these safety tips to help:

  • Watch kids when they are in or around water without being distracted. Young children can drown in as little as one inch of water, so it’s important to keep them within arm’s reach of an adult.
  • Empty tubs, buckets, containers, and kids’ pools immediately after use. Store them upside down and out of children’s reach.
  • Install fences around home pools. A pool fence should surround all sides of the pool and be at least four feet tall with self-closing and self-latching gates.
  • Learn basic swimming, CPR, and basic water rescue skills.

The notice was prompted by the recent drowning death of a pre-teen and the nonfatal drownings of two toddlers in Habersham County.

In 2018, Now Habersham produced this video illustrating how to perform CPR on a child who has drowned. We urge you to take a moment to watch this video – it could save a life.
